How does happiness affect aging? by Best Facials Singapore
or should we say
How does happiness prevent aging?
As a biochemist/chemist by training and having worked in the fast-paced telecoms industry till a point of near burn- out, I ask a few fundamental questions:
How do we keep a delicate balance of work-life?
If life is transcient, should we choose to seek peace in the mountains and not be entangled in this break-neck pace of life?
How do we achieve lasting happiness? Does happiness keep us more youthful?
Scientifically, it has been proven that happy people are healthier people. Endorphin and Dopamine are happy hormones which will help prevent degenerative diseases including heart related ailments esp. high blood pressure and gene mutation eg. cancer. On the other end of the spectrum, cortisol produced by stress is related to shorter telomeres on our DNA which will affect the accuracy of cell division.
For the past 20 years, I focused on understanding how one derive lasting happiness and how it affects the aging process. My journey started with the teachings from some authors including Dalai Lama, Echart Tolle, Deepak Chopra, Robin Sharma, Lao Tzu, Brian Tracy, Tony Robbins and lately the more obnoxious Gary Vee.
These spiritual and motivational teachers may have different messages but they all sound the same note:
We derive lasting happiness by focusing on helping others besides our own family and ourselves. If we find our own calling in helping others, work is play. We are always in the moment and time stands still for us. Youth also stand still for us.
Life is ironical isn’t it?
Who would have imagined by helping others, you’re actually helping yourself?
Yes, as a practicing beautician, am advocating for my clients to be beautiful by living a meaningful life. Many of whom I speak to find it hard to fulfill a life of dreams whilst raising a young family. Many also can’t imagine leaving a high-paying job to start something of their own. Many are blessed to have built a safety nest and have the financial means to try their hands on a new venture.
Regardless of one’s financial standings, inner peace is not by chance. It is often cultivated by feeding the soul with the right food. Tools including yoga, tai chi, good books and constantly serving the community have shown be some winning formula. And like what Dr Robert Waldinger mentioned in the video below, being in meaningful relationship and giving others our full attention are important elements of keeping happy and healthy.
